Directed Fine Sort Module

The Information Technology, Inc. Directed Fine Sort Module (DFM) greatly reduces the time
required to sort items into account number order by using fewer passes than required by a conventional digit fine sort.
When using a conventional digit fine sort, items are sorted according to the number of digits
in the highest account number. This method of sorting requires a pass for each digit in that account number. When using the Directed Fine Sort Module, the number of passes required
is based upon the number of accounts to be sorted and the number of pockets available on
the high speed reader/sorter.
An added feature of the Directed Fine Sort Module is the capability to create the "All Items File", which is used by the Bulk Filing Module to produce the "Crippled Statement Report". This feature eliminates the time consuming task of counting the account items, a task that is otherwise performed by another Bulk Filing program.
Directed Fine Sort Procedures
The Directed Fine Sort Module can be used in one of two environments: in conjunction with
the Information Technology, Inc. Bulk Filing Module, or as a stand-alone sort program.
Institutions using the Bulk Filing Module will sort and file items by statement cycle each processing day. The Directed Fine Sort Module will then be used at statement rendering time to sort the items from the appropriate cycle tray into account number order or ZIP code sequence. (Account items will be automatically sorted into the same sequence that the DDA statements were produced, such as in ZIP code order.)
Institutions using the Directed Fine Sort Module as a stand-alone program will sort items into account number sequence only.
